Jane Liu and the Elders of Zion

Jane Liu and the Elders of Zion

In preparing this story for publication we felt strongly impressed by the Spirit to “leave it alone”, to let these people speak for themselves. Therefore, this story is presented in the words of the participants, with minor changes only where required for clarity.

Jane Liu: I'm grateful that the missionaries found me and my family. We are new immigrants to Canada. We moved here because we want to have a better environment. Also, we want our daughter to have good education opportunity, so my daughter and I came to Canada. I met the missionaries about a month after I came to Canada.

Jane Liu:

Elder Earley: I first met Jane on Yonge Street, in downtown North York. She almost turned away due to not speaking much English, but she opened up a lot more when I spoke to her in her native tongue of Mandarin. She was hesitant to meet at first but accepted an invitation to come to church. She came to church with her husband and 10-year-old daughter.

Elder Earley

Jane: He gave me the address of the Church. I remember the happy feeling when I came to Church for the first time. I cried when I attended the lesson from a sister. But I like the feeling I had at Church.

Jane

Elder Earley: They were invited by us and the members to meet and learn more. She accepted a time to meet at a member family’s home later that week. We met her there and shared the Restoration. At the close of the lesson, we invited Jane to offer the closing prayer. We knelt in the member’s home in prayer and Jane very literally poured out her heart to her Heavenly Father sharing about the challenges and fears she had for her family and daughter. An overwhelming love filled the room and testified so clearly of God’s love for Jane.

Elder Earley

Jane: I'm grateful for my first prayer; I had tears in my eyes. I strongly feel the love from Heavenly Father that day. When I was in China, I went to another church for almost a year, but I never found I was being guided. I didn't feel the love from Heavenly Father. I like the feeling I had after my first prayer, it made me feel the love from Heavenly Father. I know he loves me; he helped me and my family find the Church. He lets us not feel lonely here.

Jane

Elder Earley: She was baptized a month later with her daughter, on her birthday as a constant reminder that God would not forget her.

Elder Earley

Jane: We're also grateful for the teaching from the missionaries. After we got baptized, we prayed every day. However, we didn't do family prayer or read the scriptures often. The missionaries encouraged us to read scriptures and have family prayers. So, I set a family plan with my daughter. We started to pray together and read Scriptures every day.

It is something very great. I believe if we just open the Book of Mormon we will receive blessings. I want to testify of the Book of Mormon. Before I didn't know there is so much power from the Book of Mormon but I was willing to give it a test. I have come to know its power and strength. It has changed me and changed my family.

I used to be a mom with a bad temper and I was not kind to my daughter. I thought I was always right. I did not recognize what a terrible mom I was and how weak my family was then. Now I have changed. I do not yell at my daughter. I love her from my heart and I want her to be happy.

My husband lives in China (my husband can't live here because he has a job in China) and he has also felt the change from me and my daughter. My husband has felt we have so much love. Although we are not together every day, our relationship has become closer because of the gospel. We plan to have my husband come to Canada later but it will take some time as we just moved here last year. My husband also likes Canada so he will come here later. Now I really know the blessings from the Book of Mormon and the family prayer.

Elder Earley: In the months following her baptism, Jane had a dream where her father’s grandmother told her to take her name to the temple. She said, “the missionaries will help you”. Jane attended the temple within nine weeks of us explaining how to find her grandmother’s name. She talked about the temple as the most peaceful place on earth.

Elder Earley

Jane: Yes, one day I dreamed about a deceased family member, my father's grandmother. In the dream, she was walking to me hurriedly with my mother’s help. I was afraid; then I woke up. After a while, I fell to sleep again.

Jane

I heard a voice speaking to me telling me to help my great grandmother to get baptized. Then I heard the voice speaking to me again telling me that missionaries would help me do the temple work. The voice was so clear and so unique that I still remember clearly. I had never experienced this before.

After I woke up I was stunned for a while. Then I started to believe that the temple is a special place so I decided to go to the temple. I went ahead to collect my great grandmother’s information and brought her name to the temple. I did baptism for her and had someone do her endowment. I remember I had great joy after I came back from the temple that day. I felt the peace and joy from the temple. I had a great sleep that night.

Before, I had always dreamed about my great grandmother, who was not in good condition. All those dreams brought unpeaceful feelings. Since I did temple work for my great grandmother I haven’t dreamed of her for half a year and I have had peaceful feelings.

Elder Earley: Jane and her daughter remain faithful members. I know that our Heavenly Father is aware of each of His children and that individuals are being prepared each day to receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ and respond to the invitation to learn of Him.

Elder Earley

Jane: I really like our church. I know it is the only true church on the earth. I love the temple! I am great for the temple of the church. I know my Heavenly Father loves us and He wants His children to be happy. If we follow His commandments He will bless us.
